The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the country’s most visited national park. It is open to the public year-round, weather permitting, with hiking trails, cultural and historic exhibits, fabulous waterfalls and famous lookout points such as Clingman’s Dome and Newfound Gap. The park is internationally recognized as a United Nations Biosphere park, offering the most bio-diverse environment in North America.
Ski enthusiasts have the choice of resorts at Maggie Valley, North Carolina, just east on Highway 74 from Cherokee Bluff, as well as Sky Valley, Georgia and the famous Ober Gatlinburg in Tennessee. For the whitewater enthusiast, there is the Olympic whitewater course built for the 2000 Atlanta Olympic Games, which is approximately one hour away.
Western Carolina University is only 25 minutes from Franklin and 15 minutes from Dillsboro, offering a new fine arts facility with live entertainment from stand-up comics to ballet and orchestra, for both lighthearted and more sophisticated entertainment. The university offers both degree seeking and non-degree seeking courses in a variety of subject and interest areas.
